Thomas M. Mulcahy
PARTNER Thomas M. Mulcahy, received a B.A. degree in Political Science from Fordham University in 1970 and a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1974. Mr. Mulcahy began his career as an in-court investigator during law school under then Hudson County Prosecutor (later Superior Court and Appellate Division Judge) Geoffrey Gaulkin. He then served as an Assistant Prosecutor under Hudson County Prosecutor (later Superior Court Judge), James T. O'Halloran, rising to become Chief Homicide Prosecutor for that office. Mr. Mulcahy joined Purcell, Ries & Shannon in 1978, became a name partner in 1980, and the firm's Managing Partner in 1984.
Mr. Mulcahy has a broad range of litigation and trial experience. He has defended corporations in complex product liability suits, multi-party litigation, toxic tort litigation, premises liability accidents, property claims and employment law matters. He has litigated claims in all areas of insurance coverage and policy disputes including first-party property, subrogation, legal, architectural and engineering and broker/agent matters. Mr. Mulcahy has been frequently retained to investigate and litigate claims involving insurance fraud. He has handled numerous commercial litigation matters including suits against corporate officers, employment-related issues, and commercial transactions. He has drafted and negotiated employment contracts for highly compensated employees and officers, and has extensive experience in drafting and litigating employment contracts. He has also successfully represented plaintiffs in significant personal injury, wrongful death and survivor actions.
Mr. Mulcahy has been a frequent lecturer on various aspects of trial practice before bar association groups. He is a former President of the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey. Mr. Mulcahy served as a Bencher in The Joseph Halpern American Inn of Court (1995-1999) and is a member of the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel, American Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, New Jersey Defense Association and Association of Trial Lawyers of America - NJ.
