Joseph R . Purcell
PARTNER Joseph R. Purcell received his B.A. degree from Seton Hall University in 1953 and his LLB degree from Fordham Law School in 1956, where he was an Editor of the Law Review. Mr. Purcell earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1961 and an LLM in Taxation from New York University Graduate Law School in 1962.
From 1962 through 1968, he served as Assistant Director of Taxes for W.R. Grace and Co. in New York City. From 1969-1984, he led the Corporate and Tax Department of the firm of Crummy, Del Deo, Dolan and Purcell in Newark, New Jersey. He served as Managing Partner at Crummy, Del Deo from 1972-1983. In 1985, he founded and headed the Corporate and Tax Department of Courter, Kobert, Laufer, Purcell & Cohen, P.C. in Morristown, New Jersey. He joined Purcell, Ries, Shannon, Mulcahy & O'Neill as a partner in 1994.
Mr. Purcell Chairs the Corporate/Estates and Trusts Department of the firm. He is a specialist in the areas of asset preservation & wealth management, business formations, mergers and acquisitions, tax planning, estate planning, estate administration and estate and trust litigation. He has extensive experience in drafting corporate agreements, limited partnership agreements, shareholder agreements, confidentiality agreements, covenants not to compete and various types of employment contracts.
As a member of New Jersey State Bar for over fifty years, Mr. Purcell has become one of New Jersey's leading tax and corporate attorneys and is past Chairman of the Taxation Section of the New Jersey Bar Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel of the American Bar Association and a member of its Fiduciary Litigation Committee. Today, he is the Chair of the Estate Tax Committee of the Taxation Section of the New Jersey State Bar. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and the New Jersey State Bar Association.
