Elizabeth Callaghan Flanagan

PARTNER
Elizabeth Callaghan Flanagan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Fairfield University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Seton Hall Law School where she was a member of Law Review. Mrs. Flanagan is currently enrolled in the LLM Tax Program at New York Law School. After graduating from Seton Hall, Mrs. Flanagan accepted a clerkship with the Honorable David D. Furman of the Superior Court of New Jersey.

Following her clerkship with Judge Furman, she joined the firm of Pitney, Hardin, Kipp & Szuch where she worked on and supervised complex litigation matters for major clients and developed a specialty in cases involving the banking and insurance industries. Mrs. Flanagan provided her clients with a full spectrum of legal services, including advice directed at litigation avoidance, the defense and initiation of lawsuits, an active motion and trial practice and the settlement of disputes through mediation. Mrs. Flanagan was instrumental in forging favorable results in major coverage and bad faith actions involving significant insurance companies. In addition, she obtained positive decisions on behalf of her banking clients in cases involving a wide variety of issues.

After nearly seven years at Pitney, Mrs. Flanagan joined the firm of Shanley & Fisher where she continued to represent her clients in the banking and insurance industries and also added telecommunications and pharmaceutical companies to her client base. While at Shanley, Mrs. Flanagan provided coverage advice and monitoring assistance to major insurance companies. In addition, she was successful in representing a major title insurance company in connection with title actions on behalf of its insureds. A jury trial on behalf of a major banking client ended favorably and was hailed as one of the most significant decisions favoring banks that year by the New Jersey Law Journal.

Mrs. Flanagan left Shanley & Fisher after four years and started a consulting firm that provided legal services to law firms seeking her advice in litigation matters, particularly those involving the banking and insurance fields. In 2002, Mrs. Flanagan was offered an in-house attorney position at the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies. While at Chubb, she monitored complex litigation and coverage matters and supervised litigation with a goal to swift and fair resolution of claims. Mrs. Flanagan prepared detailed coverage letters for complex litigation claims involving such areas as securities, shareholder derivative actions, bank fraud, antitrust, ERISA and employment laws. Mrs. Flanagan was involved in the setting of reserves in high impact cases, made presentations to Chubb’s top executives in connection with those cases and attended mediations throughout the country to assist in the settling of significant claims. She also provided regular seminars with Chubb’s underwriters to alert corporate clients and insurance agents to the nature and scope of coverage afforded by various specialty products.

As a result of her experience working at Chubb, Mrs. Flanagan and an insurance industry colleague decided to start the law firm, Duncan & Flanagan. The firm’s purpose was to provide the highest quality legal services to insurance and banking clients at reasonable rates. The firm opened its doors in May 2007 and the founding partners’ unique industry experience generated significant work.

Mrs. Flanagan has joined the firm of Purcell Ries Shannon Mulcahy & O’Neill because its attorneys share her vision of the highest quality legal services at reasonable rates and are able to provide her clients with tremendous legal experience and support.
